Frequently Asked Questions

Everything customers ask about our iron doors — pricing, measurements, installation, warranty, and the factory-direct process. 68 answers grouped into 16 topics.

Pricing & Transparency

No — we don't charge an extra design fee within the same pricing tier. A simple panel design and a highly ornate scrollwork design of the same size and shape cost exactly the same. Pricing is based on door shape and type, not the complexity of the decorative ironwork.

Double doors have a minimum size of 60" wide × 80" tall. Single doors have a minimum size of 36" wide × 80" tall. These minimums reflect standard entryway openings and ensure proper structural integrity.

Your base price includes the door itself, all ironwork and glass, your choice of 12 color finishes, your choice of 8 glass types, and your chosen swing direction (4 options). Entry hardware is selected in the configurator: conventional iron handles include a standard US deadbolt, built-in lock handles combine the handle and lock, and customer-supplied hardware can be selected with no Oya hardware charge.

We offer two optional protection upgrades priced by door size: Hot-Dip Galvanizing is $50/m² and adds a zinc protection layer for improved rust resistance in high-humidity or coastal environments. PVDF Coating is $60/m² and adds an architectural-grade fluoropolymer finish for stronger UV and weather resistance. Georgia sales tax (6%) is added to every order.

Yes. Every design on our website has a live configurator that calculates your exact price in real time as you adjust the rough opening size, color, glass type, and hardware options — no email signup, no sales call. For the most accurate estimate, measure the rough opening in your wall and enter those numbers directly; we build the finished door 1" narrower and 1" shorter than the opening so it installs cleanly. Once you place the $100 measurement deposit we schedule a professional measurement — if the confirmed dimensions differ from your estimate, the price adjusts accordingly.

Designs & Catalog

We offer 171 designs total — 119 double doors and 52 single doors. Each is available in straight-top, arched-top, eyebrow-arch-top, or with sidelights configurations. Browse all designs at oyadoors.com/doors with filters by style and shape.

We offer four top-shape options: Straight Top (clean horizontal — modern and traditional homes), Eyebrow Top (subtle arch — adds architectural character without dominating), Full Arched Top (grand round arch — dramatic entries), and With Sidelights (narrow glass panels flanking the door for extra light).

A single door is one full door panel, typically 36"-48" wide, ideal for standard entryways. A double door is two matching panels that both open, typically 60"-72" wide total — more dramatic and allows larger items through. Double doors are the most popular choice for iron door entries. We offer 52 single designs and 119 double designs.

Yes. Our manufacturing partner is one of the largest iron door factories in the world, so if you send us a sketch, photo, or reference of a design you love, we can build it to spec. Custom designs carry a one-time design fee that is quoted case by case based on materials and labor required — typically modest, but the exact figure depends on complexity. Email info@oyadoors.com with your reference image for a specific quote.

We don't operate a retail showroom — this is part of how we keep factory-direct pricing low. Two in-person options are usually available: (1) if a customer door is currently staged at our Atlanta-area warehouse before delivery, you can schedule an appointment to view it, and (2) many past customers are happy to host a short drive-by visit of their installed door. Contact info@oyadoors.com and we'll arrange whichever works best for your location.

Sizing & Measurement

Measure the rough opening (the framed space in the wall where the door sits — not the existing door itself). Measure width at top, middle, and bottom — use the smallest value. Measure height on the left, center, and right — use the smallest value. Enter those rough-opening dimensions directly into our configurator. We build the door 1" narrower and 1" shorter than the opening so it installs cleanly with a minimum gap between the wall and frame.

The size you enter in our configurator is the rough opening (the framed space in the wall). We automatically build the finished door 1" narrower and 1" shorter than what you enter, so the frame installs cleanly with minimum gap. For example, if you enter 100" wide × 96" tall, we manufacture a door roughly 99" × 95" to fit your 100" × 96" opening.

Yes. Every door we sell is custom-built to your exact dimensions — there is no "stock size" that's cheaper. Our configurator accepts any size above the minimum (60"W × 80"H double, 36"W × 80"H single) and automatically calculates price based on square inches. There is no upcharge for non-standard sizes.

The most common sizes are 62" × 96" (standard double door) and 72" × 96" (grand double door) — these fit most new construction entryways. For existing home retrofits, 62" × 80" or 36" × 80" (single) are also common. The exact right size depends on your home's existing opening and header height.

All our doors are custom-built to your exact rough opening. Whether your opening is 61", 67", or 78" wide, we build the door to fit. There's no premium for non-standard dimensions — the price is calculated purely on the square inch area you specify.

Yes. After you place a $100 measurement deposit, we schedule a professional measurement at your home. Our installer verifies your rough opening, checks for plumb/level/square, and confirms the exact dimensions for fabrication. The $100 is applied as credit toward your final order if you proceed.

Colors & Finishes

We offer 12 professional finishes: Matte Black, Bronze Patina, Gold Bronze Punch, Aged Bronze Patina, Aged Bronze, Aged Bronze Pewter, Aged Pewter, Aged Pewter Patina, Gold Brush, Rose Copper, Brassy, and King Golden. All 12 colors are included in the base price at no extra charge. See all finishes at oyadoors.com/doors/color-preview.

Matte Black is our most popular finish by far — it's timeless, classic, and complements virtually every home exterior. Aged Bronze is second, especially for Mediterranean and traditional homes. Gold-toned finishes (Gold Bronze Punch, Brassy, King Golden) are trending for contemporary luxury homes.

Yes. Every Oya door is powder-coated — the same multi-stage, high-durability finish used on modern automobiles. Dry polyester powder is electrostatically applied and then oven-baked to bond with the iron surface, producing a hard, chip-resistant, UV-stable finish that outlasts conventional wet paint. This is why all 12 finishes carry our 5-year finish warranty.

Not at this time. We offer 12 pre-finished color options — each is available on every door in our catalog. Custom paint-matching isn't part of our standard service because our finishes are applied in multiple baked layers for durability, and matching outside that process would compromise the finish warranty.

Glass Options

We offer 8 glass types: Clear (maximum transparency, shows off ironwork), Aqualite (subtle wave texture), Aquatex (deeper aquatic texture), Diamond (geometric diamond pattern), Rainstorm (rain-drop effect), Reflective (mirror finish, max privacy), Wood (wood grain texture), and Frost (all-over frosted privacy). See samples at oyadoors.com/doors/glass-guide.

Yes. All glass in our iron doors is tempered and meets or exceeds building code requirements for entry doors. Tempered glass is 4-5× stronger than regular glass and breaks into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards if impacted.

All of our glass is double-pane as standard — providing strong insulation and noise reduction at no extra cost. Double-pane tempered glass is included on every door regardless of which of the 8 glass styles you choose (Clear, Aqualite, Aquatex, Diamond, Rainstorm, Reflective, Wood, or Frost).

Our insulated glass units use dual-pane tempered glass: 5mm tempered glass, a 9mm insulated air space, and another 5mm tempered glass layer. A single 5mm tempered pane weighs about 12.5 kg per square meter, while the full dual-pane insulated unit weighs about 25 kg per square meter. We also use EPDM weather seals to help improve air sealing and long-term durability.

Most of our textured glass options — Aqualite, Aquatex, Diamond, Rainstorm, Wood, and Frost — provide strong daytime and nighttime privacy while letting light through. Frost offers the most complete privacy. The two glass types we'd steer away from if privacy matters are Clear (no privacy by design) and Reflective (works as a one-way mirror during daylight but becomes see-through from outside at night when your interior lights are on). If nighttime privacy is a concern, choose any textured option.

The ironwork is in front of the glass, so it's always visible from outside regardless of glass type. Clear glass maximizes the view from inside looking out. Textured/frosted glass obscures the view in both directions while still allowing natural light.

Hardware & Handles

Hardware is selected in the configurator. You can choose a conventional iron handle with a standard US deadbolt, a built-in lock handle where the lock is integrated into the handle set, or customer-supplied hardware with no Oya hardware charge. Conventional iron handles are $480 for single doors and $680 for double doors. Built-in lock handles start at $480 single / $600 double, with premium built-in lock styles priced up to $630 single / $800 double.

Our standard handle is a long pull-style iron lever, color-matched to the door finish you choose. The pull style pairs especially well with smart locks because the deadbolt position above the handle stays unobstructed for keypad, thumbprint, or electronic cylinder hardware. If you'd prefer a handle with an integrated lock, let us know at configuration — alternate hardware options are listed on each door's configuration page.

Yes. Each door configurator offers 10 conventional iron handle styles with reference codes such as H09 and H03, plus 13 built-in lock handle styles with model reference codes such as F03A-156-US19. Conventional handles include a separate standard US deadbolt. Built-in lock handles do not include a separate deadbolt because the lock is integrated into the handle set.

Security & Locks

Yes. Iron doors are dramatically more resistant to forced entry than wood or fiberglass doors. The solid iron frame, steel reinforcement, and multi-point locking options make kick-ins, lock picking, and glass-break entries much harder. Iron doors are often cited in home security recommendations as the top choice for entry protection.

All glass is tempered (breaks into small blunt pieces) but not laminated. For intruder resistance, the glass is positioned behind the iron scrollwork — the ironwork prevents reach-through even if the glass is broken. For maximum security, you can upgrade to laminated tempered glass (contains a plastic interlayer that holds pieces together when struck).

Swing & Direction

We offer 4 swing directions: Inswing Left, Inswing Right, Outswing Left, Outswing Right. Inswing means the door opens into your home; outswing means it opens outward. Left/right is determined by which side the hinges are on when you face the door from outside.

Inswing is the most common choice — the door opens into your home. Pros: weather seal is better protected, easier hinge access for maintenance, storm doors can be added outside. Cons: requires interior clearance. Outswing is useful for small entryways without interior clearance, and is often required by building code in coastal hurricane zones. Your architect or builder can confirm which is right for your home.

Stand outside facing the door. If the hinges are on your LEFT and the door opens TOWARD you, it's a Left Outswing. If hinges on LEFT and opens AWAY, Left Inswing. Same logic for right hand. Our swing guide (oyadoors.com/doors/swing-guide) has a visual interactive selector to help you choose.

No. Iron doors are engineered and manufactured for a specific swing direction — interior weatherstripping, hinge placement, and frame orientation differ. Changing swing direction after manufacture requires reworking the frame. Please confirm your swing direction carefully before ordering.

Both doors open. One is the "active" door (with the lockset and handle) used for everyday entry. The other is the "inactive" door, secured by slide-bolts or flush bolts, opened when you need a wider passage (moving furniture, large items). Both doors can open to approximately 90 degrees.

Installation

Yes. We coordinate installation through experienced independent partner contractors familiar with our iron doors. Installation is not included in the online door estimate. Standard partner-contractor installation is usually about $600–$800 for a single door and about $900–$1,100 for a double door. That typical scope includes removal/trash haul-away and 2" basic interior trim. Non-standard scenarios, exterior trim, painting, structural modifications, unusual openings, or specialty finish work are quoted case by case by the contractor.

Installation is separate from the door estimate and is billed by the independent partner contractor. A standard single-door installation is usually about $600–$800. A standard double-door installation is usually about $900–$1,100. These typical prices include removal/trash haul-away and 2" basic interior trim. Final installation cost is confirmed after measurement because structural work, exterior trim, paint touch-up, oversized openings, and unusual site conditions can change the scope.

Iron doors can be installed by experienced DIY homeowners with proper tools and ideally a helper (iron doors are heavy — 300-900 lbs depending on size). However, we strongly recommend professional installation to ensure proper sealing, level/plumb fit, and warranty compliance. Improper installation is a common source of rubbing, gaps, and leaks.

A standard iron door replacement typically takes 4-8 hours for a professional crew. This includes removing the old door, prepping the opening, setting and plumbing the new frame, shimming, installing the door slab(s), weatherstripping, and hardware. Complex installations (non-square openings, structural modifications) may take a full day.

Yes, someone 18+ should be present to grant access and review the installation at completion. You don't need to supervise continuously, but should be available for questions and the final walkthrough.

For a standard replacement where the new door matches your existing opening, no wall or floor modification is needed. Trim and paint touch-ups around the frame are typical and included in most installations. For size changes (e.g., upgrading from single to double), some framing work may be required — we confirm scope during measurement.

Delivery & Lead Time

Every door is fully custom-built, so expect roughly 3.5 to 4.5 months total from order to installation. That typically breaks down as 1–2 months of manufacturing at the factory, plus ocean freight and inland shipping for the remainder. We update you at each stage: design sign-off, production start, shipping confirmation, and delivery window.

Our measurement and installation services cover a 100-mile radius around Atlanta, Georgia. Within that zone we handle measurement, delivery, and coordinated installation. We also deliver (freight only, no installation) to other parts of Georgia.

Doors arrive by freight carrier direct to your driveway. Because delivery includes curb-side offload, you don't need to hire extra help to move the crate from the truck. The freight carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window.

Delivery is included in the base price for customers within our Georgia service area — no extra freight or handling fees.

Care & Maintenance

Monthly cleaning: wipe with a soft damp cloth and mild soap (dish soap or car wash soap). Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powder, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners which can damage the finish. For bird droppings or sticky residue, clean promptly to prevent staining.

Iron naturally oxidizes (rusts) when exposed to water and oxygen — the finish and protective coatings are what prevent it. With proper care and occasional touch-ups, your door will not show visible rust for decades. Homes in coastal or high-humidity environments may see spotting at the 5-10 year mark; hot-dip galvanizing upgrade prevents this entirely.

Sand the rust spot lightly with fine steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper until you reach clean metal. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Apply a small amount of color-matched paint (included in your touch-up kit). Let cure 24 hours. Early intervention keeps spots from spreading.

Lubricate hinges annually with white lithium grease or silicone lubricant (not WD-40, which attracts dust). Apply a small amount to the hinge pins and wipe off excess. Squeaky hinges are a sign lubrication is overdue. Well-lubricated hinges should last 20+ years.

The rubber/foam weatherstripping around the door seals out air, water, and insects. Inspect annually for cracks, compression, or gaps. Replace as needed (replacements available from us or any hardware store). Clean with mild soap — don't use oil-based cleaners which degrade the rubber.

Durability & Climate

Iron doors handle Georgia's climate excellently. Our humid summers and mild winters don't cause significant issues with properly finished iron. The door doesn't warp or swell with moisture like wood can, and doesn't expand/contract with temperature like metal-skinned foam doors. Minor seasonal adjustments may be needed if the house itself shifts.

Yes. Properly installed iron doors with intact weatherstripping are rated for heavy rain and wind. The solid iron frame resists wind pressure much better than wood doors. For hurricane-prone coastal areas, we recommend outswing configuration (often code-required) and can provide impact-rated glass on request.

Gauge is the common U.S. way to describe sheet-metal thickness. A lower gauge number means thicker steel. In standard steel gauge references, 12 gauge is about 0.1046 inches (2.66mm), and 14 gauge is about 0.0747 inches (1.90mm). Oya's 12/14-gauge construction uses heavy steel where strength matters while still allowing detailed ironwork and custom fabrication.

We use EPDM weather seals around the door system. EPDM is a common benchmark material for exterior door, window, glazing, and automotive weather seals because it resists weathering, ozone, UV exposure, moisture, and temperature changes better than many general-purpose rubbers. Flexible cellular rubber seals are commonly classified under ASTM D1056, while dense compression gasket applications often reference ASTM C864. We use those as industry benchmarks; specific certification depends on the supplier's test report.

Warranty & Returns

We offer the Oya Doors Limited Warranty with three tiers of coverage:

  • 10-year structural warranty — iron frame, welds, and core construction
  • 5-year finish warranty — paint, clear coat, and glass
  • 1-year hardware warranty — handle set, lockset, deadbolt, and accessories

Coverage applies to manufacturing defects under normal residential use. The warranty is void if the door is damaged by improper installation (when not installed by us or our recommended crew), modification, abuse, or failure to perform routine maintenance.

Every door is built to order, so standard returns aren't offered. The process protects you from surprises: before production, we share a detailed design document with exact measurements, colors, glass, and configuration for you to review and sign. Once signed, the 50% ordering deposit becomes non-refundable. We don't accept returns of finished doors, but any manufacturing defect is repaired or replaced at no cost under warranty.

Cancellation terms depend on where you are in the process:

  • Before the measurement appointment — full $100 refund
  • After measurement is confirmed (before design sign-off) — $100 deposit becomes non-refundable
  • After design sign-off (production begins) — you lose the 50% ordering deposit; the remaining 50% balance is waived
  • After delivery — cancellation is no longer possible; order is final

Payment & Financing

We accept:

  • $100 measurement deposit — PayPal (credit card supported through PayPal)
  • 50% ordering deposit (after design sign-off) — check or cash
  • Final 50% balance (at shipping) — check or cash

If you need an alternative payment method (ACH or wire), contact info@oyadoors.com before placing the order.

Yes — a $100 refundable deposit reserves your quote and schedules measurement. After design sign-off, a 50% production deposit starts manufacturing, and the remaining 50% is due at shipping. The $100 is applied as credit toward your final balance if you proceed.

Not at this time. We may add a financing option in the future — if financing is essential to moving forward, contact info@oyadoors.com and we'll see what we can accommodate.

Factory Direct & Manufacturing

Factory direct means you're buying your door directly from the manufacturer, without middlemen (distributors, showrooms, installers with markup). We manufacture every door ourselves and ship to your home or project site. The savings from cutting out the distribution chain — typically 30-40% — pass directly to you.

Our doors are manufactured in China, at one of the world's largest dedicated iron door factories. The factory produces for multiple US brands; by sourcing direct and skipping the distributor markup, we pass the savings on to you. Every door ships under Oya's quality inspection and carries our full limited warranty.

Each door is custom-fabricated in a multi-step process: (1) steel framing cut to your exact dimensions, (2) iron scrollwork laser-cut or hand-forged and welded into the frame, (3) double-pane tempered glass cut and installed behind the ironwork, (4) multi-stage primer, paint, and clear coat baked on in layers, (5) hardware installed and tested, (6) QC inspection before crating. Total factory time is typically 6 to 8 weeks per order.
